There is overwhelming evidence that traditional masculinities (those that prescribe rigid "rules" for what it means to be a man) are drivers of mental health concerns for men and boys, contributing to depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, relationship issues, and more. I take a unique approach in work with men and boys, helping them to expand their horizons by developing self-compassion and empowerment for their whole selves. If you're looking for a safe environment to explore yourself and heal, you can count on my office being a "bro"-free zone.
Exploring Queer Identity
Narrative and Relational-Cultural Approaches
Mental Health of Men and Boys
I integrate narrative and relational-cultural approaches to counseling and counselor education. By focusing on the power of storytelling and the importance of relationships and cultural context, I help individuals rewrite their stories, heal from past traumas, and build meaningful connections. My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and rooted in the belief that everyone has the capacity for growth and change.
I am committed to creating an inclusive and affirming space for individuals of all racial, ethnic, sexual, affectional, and gender identities and expressions. My research was the first known to explore the intersectionality of high sensitivity with gender and racial identities. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I understand the difficulty of exploring queer identity, and am honored to help my clients explore and understand their authentic selves. Culture, context, and identity are central to my work in counseling, education, and research.
Mental Health Counseling
Mental Health Counseling is a collaborative partnership where you and I work together to understand your struggles and create meaningful change. By gaining insight into internal and external barriers to living your best, most authentic life, we can uncover hidden strengths and resources to help get you where you want to be.
Research Focus
My research has focused on qualitative methods that delve into the experiences of highly sensitive persons, exploring gender identity and masculinities, and the therapeutic benefits of utilizing the arts, pop culture, and human-animal relationships in counseling and counselor education. I'm happy to provide consultation and presentations on my areas of research focus.
